Fantastic

Swans Dragon Sofa
Paul Sarmoni Paris

This fantastic sofa was created around 1855 by Paul Sormani Paris.

The furniture is an early object of the company Paul Sormani Paris and can be characterised by the stylistic characteristics of the middle of the 19th century, all decorative elements are made in solid mahogany and not gilded or applied in gilded bronze.

Also the figure of the dragon swans as fantastic beings clearly point to the middle of the 19th century and can also be found in the early work of Paul Sormani, where it is stated that Sormani was a producer of Exquisite small Furnitures & Fantasticen Furnitures.

In addition, the back stamp proves the attribution to Paul Sormani.

It is stamped with SP  Sormani Paris) and T No 124 (Rue de Temple 124, then company address in Paris).

The extraordinary nature of the object and the masterful workmanship, both of the body and the carving of the four fully plastic swan dragons made of solid mahogany, on which the seat body rests, characterise this spectacular art object and are further testimony to the high quality standards of the House of Sormani.

In my judgement, it could have been produced in 1855 for the 1855 World's Fair in Paris.

There it was probably acquired by a wealthy Saarbrücken family,

From whose estate I was able to buy the object.
